Remembering George Coffield

After George Coffield graduated from Barber College in Cincinnati In 1936, Mr. Coffield came to Xenia to work at Ed Wood's barber shop. In 1946 the announcement was made that he would open his own shop on South Detroit Street.

Greene County Animal Control is open 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 12-4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday at 641 Dayton-Xenia Road, Xenia. Potential adopters should visit at least one hour before closing to meet animals and complete adoption paperwork.

Shoe manufacturing in Xenia -

Not too many years ago, shoe manufacturing was a major industry in Xenia with several different firms manufacturing quality shoes. Krippendorf-Ditman was one of the better known businesses known as the Xenia Shoe Manufacturing Company.

GCCC Issue 2 to appear on ballot -

Greene County Career Center has announced that its 1.03 mill bond issue to build a new facility will appear on the November ballot as Issue 2. The levy will enable the career center to move all of its main campus career-technical programs to the new building while expanding into career areas like robotics, cybersecurity, drone technology and engineering technology. "Our market research shows that there is a need for expansion," said Superintendent David Deskins.

Xenia shows improvement in some report card grades -

For the second year in a row, Xenia Community Schools showed dramatic improvement in a key component of its state report card released Sept. 13. The district went from an F to a C in gap closing, meeting 71.9 percent of the annual measurable goals in 2017-18 compared to 34.5 percent of the goals the year before.

Retired teachers hear diverse topics

Gary Kersey, a Civil War/Abraham Lincoln scholar, was the featured speaker. A lifelong Clinton County resident and a graduate of Wilmington College, Kersey brought to life the Dakota War of 1862 where more than 500 Native Americans were brought to trial and 393 were sentenced to die for their actions against white settlers and government agents.

Dayton International Airport passengers detail evacuations ahead of Hurricane Florence

Many passengers on Wednesday's 1:10 p.m. arrival at the Dayton International Airport used the Charlotte Douglass International Airport as a connection, but one passenger said the hustle and bustle at Charlotte's was unlike any he had seen before. John Dehoyos flew in from San Antonio for the Air Force Marathon this weekend, and said he could tell the anticipation of people at the airport, ready to get out of Hurricane Florence's path.

Xenia police hand out annual awards -

Elliott, a four-year veteran of the XPD, was given the Casey Elliott Memorial "City's Finest" Award for his dedication of law enforcement as well as his dedication for the Xenia Police Division. The Casey Elliott "City's Finest" Award was named after C.K. Elliott, who joined the Xenia Police Division as a patrol officer in 1943.

Church celebrates 100 years -

The Lighthouse Mission in Xenia was organized with 16 charter members and joined the Church of the Nazarene denomination in 1918. A revival meeting in the community resulted in many converts coming to faith in Jesus Christ.

Fire displaces Xenia residents

According to Xenia Fire Division Chief Ken Riggsby, a plumber was soldering new valves inside the home in the 1500 block of Seneca Drive when the fire started. While it was mostly in the attic, the fire did "significant damage" Riggsby said.

Xenia man injured in fatal accident

The Lebanon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol investigated a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred at approximately 11:58 a.m. Aug. 28 on US Route 42 near Township Line Road in Warren County. The preliminary investigation revealed that Makenna Blanding, 18, and passenger Kylee J. Blanding, 25, of Waynesville, were traveling northbound on US 42 in a white 2002 Oldsmobile Alero.
